You 101: Improving the Little Things

By Marie-Grace

In a busy, busy world full of work, family, kids, and often near-constant social connectivity, the little things are starting to matter even more- things like a long bath, or a hot breakfast. Here's a few strategies you can use to get even more out of that rare you time.

Start With Your Alarm

Perhaps no sound is more universally loathed than the shrill beep! beep! beep! most alarm clocks have pre-programmed. But why suffer through that every morning? We all know any loud or unusual sound will wake you up in the morning just as effectively, so replace the beeping with a radio or iPod alarm clock and wake up to your favorite music instead. If you're looking for an even more creative way to start your day, novelty clocks are available that will wake you with chimes, birdsong, even just by slowly increasing the light in your room (but you might want to save that last one for your days off, just in case).

Combine The Senses

There's no doubt about it, the hot bath is often the most decadent, luxurious part of your day- even when you don't have time for soft music, candles, and other little extras. But here's something you might be able to squeeze in- put on a sleeping mask, maybe while letting your conditioner soak for a few minutes, and heighten your senses at the same time you give your eyes a temporary break. If you don't have a sleeping mask, dry wetting down a handcloth and draping it over your face. The effect will be about the same, and the damp environment will have the bonus effect of helping your pores open and relax, so that any creams or moisturizers you use post-bath will be doubly effective.

Use Your Windows

At early evening find a window that faces west and has a mirror within easy viewing distance. When the sun begins to go down it gives off an extra gold-tinted light that Hollywood calls the 'magic hour' because it makes you look extra good. Boost your self-esteem by spending a minute or two checking yourself out while the light is just right.

Lower the Temperature

When the weather heats up, it can be hard to cool down, especially if you don't have A/C to rely on. Help your body beat the heat by putting your lotion, moisturizer, or aloe vera gel (good for relief of sunburn) in the fridge before using it. The chill will feel great, especially if you've been in the sun.
